Epithalon (Epitalon; Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly) is a synthetic tetrapeptide modeled after epithalamin, an endogenous extract of the pineal gland first characterized by Professor Vladimir Khavinson at the Saint Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology. The pineal gland produces epithalamin at declining rates with age in animal models, an observation that prompted decades of research into what synthetic analogs might reveal about aging biology.
The primary mechanism under study is telomerase activation. Published cell culture work has documented Epithalon's ability to upregulate telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) expression in human somatic cells that do not ordinarily express telomerase, leading to measurable telomere elongation in vitro. Whether this in-vitro effect translates meaningfully to tissue-level aging dynamics in vivo is an open and active research question—which is precisely what makes Epithalon compelling for longevity biology investigation.
